It's back! Queers & Gears is making a 2017 appearance! Come out for a
leisurely bike ride in the autumnal air. We'll meet at the Kroger on Main
St and ride the Alum Creek Trail through idyllic pastures and under
colorful canopies until we get to Three Creeks Metro Park. (Seriously, this
trail is beautiful. And it's never busy! Shh, don't tell anyone.) Then
we'll hang out for a while and picnic before heading back.

The ride will be about 5.5 miles each way. It's a no-drop ride, so no one
will be left behind. What this means:
- if you think you're "too slow" or "out of shape," don't let that stop
you!
- if you want to come for part of the ride, you can turn around at any
time. You could also coordinate with a buddy to have one car parked at the
start and one at the end so you only have to ride one way.
- if you're still not feelin it, are injured, or just plain don't have the
energy and don't want to ride, please come anyway and meet us at Three
Creeks for the picnic social time. We love our picnic fairies! It's super
helpful to have people not riding who can bring utensils, picnic blankets,
and other things good for picnic fun, so we welcome you to join us.

As the ride gets closer, we'll post exact places for meeting up and work
out the other details. In the meantime, feel free to drop any Qs in the

Talking about race, faith, and sexuality isn’t always easy, but it’s needed
now more than ever. King Avenue United Methodist Church is proud to welcome
social justice activist and LGBT worship leader Darren Calhoun to Columbus
on Sunday, October 1 at 7 p.m. to share his personal journey to bridge the
divide that exists between racial and sexual inclusivity.

Darren’s program, The Intersection of Racial & LGBTQ Identity, provides a
welcoming and engaging voice in this difficult conversation space. Darren’s
program will provide insights and practical ways the church can become a
place where all feel welcomed and loved.

Darren Calhoun is a justice advocate, worship leader, and photographer
based in Chicago who works to bridge divides between people of differing
perspectives through story and relationship. Intersectionality is his
primary lens when facilitating dialogue and education about justice and
inclusion for people marginalized based on race, gender, and sexuality.

Darren co-lead the #ImSorry and #MakeLoveLouder campaigns at Chicago’s Gay
Pride parades. In 2017 he led worship for the national gathering of the Gay
Christian Network, and serves on the board of directors for the Center for
Inclusivity and The Reformation Project. Currently, Darren is Worship
Leader at Urban Village Church - South Loop, Associate Fellow for Racial
Justice at Evangelicals for Social Action, in addition to owning Darren
Calhoun Photography. He's also an extrovert who loves hugs. Visit his site

and men’s reproductive health care. Dr. Parker works throughout the south,
including the only abortion clinic in Mississippi. He is chair of the board
of Physicians for Reproductive Health and a board member of The Religious

In a recent event at the Columbus Metropolian Club Mayor Andrew Ginther
said “there is no evidence to support a pervasive issue [with racism] in
the Columbus Division of Police.” We believe the first step is admitting
you have a problem.

Everyone wants to go home to their families at the end of the day,
including officers, but right now there is a crisis in the streets of
Columbus. Columbus Police have killed 5 Black men and boys in the past 15
months and brutalized countless more. Most recently, multiple CPD officers
were caught on camera brutalizing Timothy Davis. He remains in custody
being denied adequate medical care for his injuries.

In an era of alternative facts and executive leadership who refuses to
hear the cries of their people we seek a faithful response. We will never
bridge the divide by pretending racism doesn't exist and silencing the
cries of heartbroken Black families. Join us for a one mile silent march
against racism and bigotry stepping off at 5:30pm from Trinity Episcopal
Church.

Mayor Ginther has been listening to big donors but not to low income people
and people of color. He is hosting a thousand-dollar-a-plate fundraiser at
Strongwater, a fancy restaurant in the Bottoms. We will break the silence
by marching in silence, asking the Mayor -- Mark 8:18 Do you still not see
or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see,
and ears but fail to hear?

This event will be peaceful demonstration safe for all who want to
participate. We will briefly train on nonviolent direct action before the
march.

- Less than a quarter of CPD personnel live in a Columbus zip code and only
2 recruits in the last graduating class were Black.
- In 2016 50% of CPD's initiated traffic stops were Black drivers although
they only make up about 25% of the population.

African American officers and for excessive use of force against African
American citizens.

The 14th Amendment, Part 1: From Dred Scott v. Sanford to Brown v. The
Board of Education

Moderated by Kyle Strickland, The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race
and Ethnicity

Recognition of basic civil rights to all was the utopian vision of those
who penned the 14th amendment. Envisioned “Rights Guaranteed: Privileges
and Immunities of Citizenship, Due Process, and Equal Protection” are
foundational to modern life. Led by practicing civil rights attorneys and
constitutional law professors, this examination of the constitution and the
seminal cases defining the years spanning 1857 through the most famous
desegregation case of all time decided in 1954 is not to be missed.

The purpose of the discussion is not to stoke political divides, but rather
to lessen the rhetoric by offering historical context, legal precedent, and
active dialogue to foster a better understanding of today’s world events.
These Constitutional Conversations will continue monthly, with the next
session planned for November 9 to discuss The 14th Amendment: The Civil
Rights Act of 1964 through Obergefell vs. Hodges.

QUEER YOGA IS GROWING! We've heard from all of you that you'd be interested
in another time of the week. We also know that our current location is not
always easily accessible geographically. So here we are! This is the debut
of our class on a Thursday night at a new space - a rad studio/gallery on
the South Side called Art Outside The Lines. We will still have our Tuesday
night class at ILLIO as usual, but if this goes well, we hope to start
having class on Thursdays on a regular basis. So c'mon out!

Queer Yoga is Columbus' first queer-focused yoga class that offers
professional yoga instruction in a designated safe(r) space. We endeavor to
cultivate an atmosphere of acceptance and community in all we do, from sun
salutations to post-yoga snack time. Whether you are new to yoga, or you
can complete a headstand without assistance, you will find something to
challenge and deepen your practice.

Class fees are $6 for ALL participants. Everyone is welcome. Please bring a
mat, though a few mats are available. We also have blocks and cushions to
assist as props.

Zero Landfill is a beneficial reuse program assisting the architectural and
interior design community in diverting specification samples away from the
landfill, and re-purposing them back in the community.

Mr. Baraka is an internationally recognized leader of the emerging human
rights movement in the U.S. and has been at the forefront of efforts to

security hasn't felt this precarious since the days of the Cold War and the
Cuban Missile Crisis.

Join us as National Security experts OSU Professor Mitchell Lerner and
Major General Dennis Laich share their insights and expertise. Otterbein
visiting professor Jason Keiber will moderate a panel discussion covering

Meetings are held the 3rd Monday of the month from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, located at 386 Buttles Ave. in Columbus
(just west of Goodale Park).

About & Mission:

RCC4C is an alliance of restored citizens and advocates who are working
together to affect changes in our criminal justice system. We believe in a
society where people are given second chances and the opportunity for
redemption.

Unfortunately, our present criminal justice system uses perpetuating
punishment and collateral sanctions to create an underclass among us. The
formerly incarcerated must have the ability to be rehabilitated and return
to their families and the community with the tools necessary to rebuild and
restructure their lives.

Indeed, social justice demands that the criminal justice system be
reevaluated, that barriers to employment, housing and other critical
services be removed, and that increased resources—pre and post release—be
used to assist individuals to restore their lives.

Those closest to the problems have insights about these issues and their
voices must be heard as solutions are crafted. Restored citizens’
perspectives and those whose lives have been impacted by the criminal
justice system provide a different lens for community members and decision
makers to think about criminal justice issues. This shift in thinking is
necessary to achieve broad, meaningful, humane and lasting criminal justice
reform.

Advocacy Priorities:

* Improve the support systems for those who are re-entering society
from incarceration - It is estimated that 95% of prisoners will be
released back into the community. These individuals and receiving
communities would be better served if those who are returning have
reliable access to housing, mental health care, recovery programs,
and sustainable employment that will keep them out of poverty. This
will help to reduce recidivism, reduce violence, and heal and
stabilize families.
* Promote humane treatment and restorative measures for those currently
incarcerated – A majority of those entering our jails and prisons
suffer with mental illness and/or addiction. These individuals need
access to effective treatment. In 2015, Ohio prisons held 10 times
the amount of mentally ill than mental health institutions in our
state. [v] Furthermore, 80% of prisoners in Ohio have not completed
high school and lack critical skills needed to maintain gainful
employment, which is critical to the stability of the family. [vi]
Restoration and rehabilitation needs to be central to the treatment
of those currently incarcerated.
* Lower the population in our county jails and state prisons – Our
Jails and prisons are costly not only to individuals and families who
are directly impacted by incarceration, but also to the taxpayers in
Ohio. Since 1980 Ohio’s prison population has more than tripled. 1 in
4 state employees work in corrections. [vii] There are many areas in
need of reform to help reduce the numbers of people incarcerated,
including how we police our communities, creating more alternatives
to incarceration, sentencing reform, and changing policies like
mandatory minimums which limit judicial discretion.
* Address policies and practices which serve as the foundation for
unequal representation of black males, people of color, and the
economically disadvantaged within the criminal justice system- The
majority of individuals incarcerated are already marginalized in our
society. Many policies and procedures used in our criminal justice
system further target and disenfranchise these populations,
increasing opportunity and wealth disparities in our communities.
Issues like high costs for attorneys, court fees and bail also place
many at a disadvantage maneuvering the criminal justice system.

My Bruises Are From and Relson Gracie Academy - Columbus will be hosting a
fundraising open mat for Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.
This event, at the home academy of Founder, Nicole Beach, will benefit
*Choices Eliminating Domestic Violence*

1 in 4 women, 1 in 7 men, are survivors of domestic violence. Surprised at
how high the numbers are? Statistics show that you probably know and have
even trained with a survivor -- whether you know it or not. Chances are
too, that you know someone who is still in an unhealthy and unsafe living
environment where the shame and stigma from abuse keeps them suffering in
silence.

Come help us SUBMIT THE SILENCE to END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Be their voice
while we enjoy the sport that we all love. Bring material goods to donate
and help us raise funds for the shelters and survivor support services that
rebuild lives. Help our family, friends and neighbors know that abuse is
not okay, that they have a voice, and they have a choice!

All proceeds from My Bruises Are From patches and apparel sales from this
event will be donated to Choices in Columbus, along with any direct
donations collected at the door.

The 2nd annual B.R.E.A.D! festival of arts and community takes place in
Historic Dublin, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 from 12 to 9 p.m.
Activities will include community booths, traditional music and dance,
hands-on artmaking, international cuisine, bread vendors, food trucks, a
global marketplace and more. The festival is free of charge and is being
developed by a diverse group of community members to preserve cultural

On Sunday, October 22nd at 4:00pm, join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers
(CIW) and allies for a moving interfaith service at First Congregational
Church of Christ to prayerfully enjoin Wendy's to stand with farmworker
women in ending sexual violence in the fields. Representatives from the
CIW's formidable Women's Group will be in attendance at the service,
sharing their experiences and uniting in the struggle for justice with
Columbus-based faith communities.
